The kitchen is a generally messy area, but when you add little furry creatures and kiddos, it becomes somewhat of a war zone. The floor is constantly wet from the dog’s bowl and kids’ spills, the cabinets are forever sticky with handprints, the appliances are always filthy (even if you just wiped them down), and don’t even get me started on the state of the countertops. If your kitchen sees sticky hands, dog paws, constant cleaning, and the general chaos of family life – the finish on your cabinets matters more than the color. A beautiful finish that chips, scratches, and wears through in two years is a bad investment. What Makes a Finish Durable in the First Place

Two things: the product and the application.

A tough coating brushed on poorly will fail faster than a good coating sprayed and cured correctly. This is why we apply nearly all our finishes horizontally, sprayed with HVLP turbines and dried on horizontal drying racks. This technique takes more time, but it really pays off in the long run. Spraying eliminates brush marks and lays down an even, hard-wearing film, and horizontal curing lets it level and harden properly. Application is half the durability story, and it’s the half most DIY and low-cost jobs get wrong.

Cabinet Finishes, Ranked for Family Durability

  • 1. Conversion varnish and precatalyzed finishes.
These are the toughest coatings commonly used on cabinets, chemically curing into a hard, chemical- and moisture-resistant film. They stand up to scrubbing, sticky hands, and daily abuse better than almost anything. This is the high-durability tier for a busy family kitchen.
  • 2. High-quality waterborne finishes (like the General Finishes products we favor).
waterborne topcoats have come a long way and offer excellent hardness and scratch resistance while being low or no-VOC, which matters when you have kids and pets in the house. They’re our go-to balance of toughness, safety, and a beautiful result.
  • 3. Oil-based enamels.

Durable and hard, but they yellow over time (especially whites) and carry higher VOCs. Less ideal for a family-focused, low-odor kitchen.

  • 4. Standard latex/acrylic wall-type paint.

This is what most DIY cabinet projects use, and it’s the least durable option. It stays slightly soft, scratches easily, and wears through at handles and edges fast. If your cabinets are chipping at kid height, this is often why.
