Cherry and maple cabinetry from that era was frequently solid hardwood with well-built boxes, better construction than a lot of what gets sold at the same price today. If the layout works for you and the boxes are sound, you’re sitting on a quality foundation that’s an ideal candidate for refinishing – like the real-life example above. Keeping and refinishing well-made cabinets is almost always a better value than tearing out solid wood to replace it with something lighter in material as well as color.

If your layout works and the boxes are sound, refinishing the cabinets plus a hardware and wall color update is often enough to make the kitchen feel like a different room, even if you keep the counters for now. If the granite is so dominant that nothing else can compete, you may want to plan for a counter change as a phase two. And if the layout itself fights how you cook, that’s a
bigger conversation. We’ll tell you honestly where your kitchen falls during a free in-home consultation.
