Search how to clean greasy cabinets and you’ll get the same three answers everywhere:
vinegar, baking soda paste, and a magic eraser. What those articles rarely mention is that all
three have the potential to quietly damage the finish you paid good money for, especially the area near the stove where grease builds up fastest. As the people who actually apply cabinet finishes for a living, here’s our honest guide to what’s safe, what isn’t, and how to keep your cabinets clean without wearing them out.

How you should clean depends on your finish.
Matte and satin finishes are the most common on today’s cabinets and the easiest to dull with abrasives.
Higher-gloss finishes show streaks and fine scratches more readily. The golden rule across all of them: clean gently, avoid anything gritty or harsh, and never let water sit.
Most finish damage from cleaning isn’t one dramatic mistake, it’s the slow wearing-down from scrubbing too hard with the wrong thing, over and over, in the same spots.
Our very own Scott’s favorite way to clean cabinets is with one part vinegar and two parts water or a gentle cleaner like Mrs. Meyer’s.

The real enemies are consistent: abrasives (grit, melamine foam, scrubby sponges), standing moisture (water left to sit works into seams and edges and causes swelling or lifting), and harsh chemicals (strong degreasers and solvent cleaners can soften or cloud a finish).
Heat and steam directly on a cabinet face, from a kettle or coffee maker tucked under an upper, also break finishes down over time.
None of these ruins a cabinet overnight, but all of them shorten its life.
Keep it simple: wipe cabinets with a soft, damp cloth and a little dish soap or vinegar, focusing on handles and the area near the stove where grease concentrates. Follow with a clean damp cloth to remove any residue, then dry with a soft towel so no moisture sits on the surface.
A quick wipe-down after high-heat or frying sessions prevents the buildup that tempts people to reach for the harsh stuff in the first place.
Gentle and regular beats aggressive and occasional, every time.
Sometimes the issue isn’t cleaning at all. If your finish is yellowing, peeling, or chipping no
matter what you do, that’s wear or an adhesion problem, not grime, and no cleaner will fix it.
That’s when it’s worth having it refinished properly. We finish with durable General Finishes low
and no-VOC products, sprayed and cured for a hard, cleanable surface that stands up to daily
family life.
